Co-Star vs The Pattern vs CHANI: Which Astrology App Fits You?
By DailyDestiny Editorial Team
The short answer
Choose Co-Star if you want short, blunt daily notes and easy chart comparisons with friends, mostly free. Choose The Pattern if you want long personality profiles, life timing cycles and relationship insight, with subscriptions from $14.99 a month. Choose CHANI if you want a gentle daily practice written by astrologers, not AI, with meditations and weekly personal readings, at $11.99 a month or $107.99 a year. Prices are from each app's US App Store listing on November 2, 2026.

Three apps, three very different voices: one blunt, one deep, one gentle. If you have been switching between them and wondering which one actually gets you, here is a fair, side-by-side look at how each works and what it costs.
On this page
Which is right for you: Co-Star, The Pattern or CHANI?
Maybe you have all three on your phone. Co-Star sent you something sharp this morning. The Pattern told you something about yourself that you are still thinking about. CHANI asked you to breathe. And you are wondering which one to keep, and which to pay for.
All three are free to download and need your exact birth time for their full readings. The difference is the voice, the depth and who writes the words.
We are not affiliated with any of these apps and there are no affiliate links on this page. DailyDestiny has free tools and one paid reading, and it is not an app, so we have no horse in this race.
Here is the side-by-side, from each app's own listing and website in November 2026.
Voice: Co-Star is short, direct and sometimes deliberately biting; its listing promises "biting truth". The Pattern is long-form and psychological; it describes itself as a mirror and a psychological blueprint. CHANI is warm, reflective and wellbeing-focused.
Who writes it: Co-Star says human astrologers collaborate with AI technology. CHANI says real astrologers, not AI. The Pattern does not make a clear statement about AI on its listing, and says its Connect dating feature uses a proprietary algorithm.
What is free: Co-Star: daily horoscopes, notifications, your chart and friend comparisons. The Pattern: daily personalised updates, bonds with anyone and part of its content library. CHANI: its listing does not spell out the free tier, so check in the app before relying on it.
Price to go deeper: Co-Star Pro-Star $8.99 a month, plus one-off reports from $2.99 to $11.99. The Pattern Go Deeper+ $14.99 a month, $29.99 a quarter or $83.99 a year. CHANI $11.99 a month or $107.99 a year.
Best for: Co-Star for a quick daily check-in. The Pattern for relationships and self-understanding. CHANI for a calm ritual.
Can I use all three at once?
Yes, and many people do, using the free tiers. If you pay for one, pick the one you open most often. Paying for all three means about $35 a month for overlapping daily content, which is more than most people need.
Do they all use the same astrology?
All three are Western astrology apps built on your full birth chart, so your signs should match across apps if you enter the same birth data. They differ in which house system and techniques they emphasise, and above all in how they write about it.
How does each app work, and what is its method?
Each app calculates your birth chart from your birth date, time and place, then compares it with the moving sky. What changes is how they turn that into words.
Co-Star: its listing says it uses NASA data to chart the exact location of the planets in real time, and that this is interpreted by real human astrologers who collaborate with AI technology to produce your birth chart and daily horoscopes. The result is short daily notes, a list of "do" and "don't" style prompts and push notifications through the day.
The Pattern: it builds a long profile it calls "Your Pattern", described as in-depth insight into your personality traits and human design, plus "Your Transits", an overview of timing cycles in your life, past, present and future. Its Bonds feature compares you with friends and partners, and Connect is a dating feature using its proprietary algorithm. Its latest listing also mentions an In-Depth conversation feature for exploring yourself and your relationships.
CHANI: daily horoscopes, planetary horoscopes, real-time Moon readings, hyper-personalised transit readings, a weekly reading for your sign and a personal weekly reading recorded by Chani Nicholas, plus meditations, journal prompts and courses such as a 7-part Saturn Return course.
What does that mean for you day to day?
Co-Star is built for a glance. You open it, read two lines, maybe laugh or wince, and close it. Its notifications are part of the experience, and some people love the surprise of a sharp line at 3pm. Others find them unsettling. You can turn notifications off and still use the app.
The Pattern is built for a sit-down. Its profiles are long and personal, and many people say they read them several times. Its timing cycles describe longer stretches of life rather than single days, which suits people who are thinking about a phase, a decision or a relationship.
CHANI is built for a ritual. Its daily content pairs the sky with a meditation or prompt, and its weekly audio readings are designed to be listened to, often on a Sunday. It feels closer to a mindfulness app with astrology at its heart.
One honest caution about The Pattern. Some people find its profiles intensely personal, in a way that can feel unsettling, and you may have seen people online say it hit them too hard. If any app's description of you leaves you feeling worse rather than understood, take a break from it. Astrology works best as a mirror you can put down.
If you want to understand the building blocks behind all three, Big Three Astrology: What Your Sun, Moon and Rising Signs Mean Together and The 12 Houses in Astrology: Life Areas Explained cover the basics.
What is "human design" in The Pattern?
Human design is a modern system created in 1987 that blends astrology with other ideas, such as the chakras and the I Ching. The Pattern's listing mentions it alongside personality traits. It is separate from traditional astrology, so it may feel different from a classic chart reading.
Why are Co-Star notifications so blunt?
Bluntness is part of Co-Star's style: its own listing promises "biting truth" and calls astrology "a shortcut to real talk in a sea of small talk". If the tone stings, turn notifications off and read the app only when you choose to.
Do you need your birth time for each app?
Yes, for the full experience all three need your exact birth time and place. Without it, your rising sign and houses can be wrong, and all three use them.
Co-Star: Apple's editors note that it analyses your birth date and time down to the minute.
The Pattern: your profile has a Time of Birth field, and its help centre explains how to edit your birth time without making a new account.
CHANI: its readings are built around your rising sign by default. CHANI's help centre says that if you do not know your birth time, you can use an estimated time or enter 12:00 pm (noon) for now. CHANI's team has also told users that if they prefer sun-sign readings, they can set their birth time to the sunrise on their birth date.
Why does the time matter so much? Your rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and it sets which house each planet falls into, and so which part of life each reading is about. A guess can shift everything by a house or two. Our guide Rising Sign (Ascendant): Your Public Persona Explained shows why.
If you do not know your time, here is what to do.
Check the long-form birth certificate first. In many places it records the time. Hospital records, a baby book or a parent's memory are the next best sources. Even "just after lunch" narrows it down.
If you have a rough window, an astrologer can sometimes estimate a time from the dates of big events in your life, which is called rectification. It is usually a paid service.
If you have nothing at all, decide what you want from the app. For daily sky weather and general themes, a noon chart is fine as long as you do not take the houses too seriously. For a reading that does not depend on a birth time at all, sun-sign approaches use your Sun sign as the first house, which is how magazine horoscopes have always worked.
That is also how DailyDestiny's free and paid readings work. The site's Your Year Ahead uses your birthday alone and solar houses, so it never pretends to know a rising sign it cannot know. It places every new moon, full moon, eclipse and retrograde of your next 12 months into those houses, so you can see month by month when your year points to love, money, work and rest.
Why do Co-Star and CHANI show different rising signs?
Almost always because of the birth data: a slightly different time, a different town or a time zone or daylight saving error. Enter exactly the same time and place in both and they should agree. If not, contact support with your details.
Can friends see my birth time in these apps?
The Pattern's help centre says your birth information is visible only to you, even on your natal chart, while confirmed friends can see your Pattern, chart and impacts. Check each app's privacy settings and help pages before adding friends.
Which app uses AI, and does it matter?
As of November 2026, Co-Star says its human astrologers collaborate with AI technology, CHANI says it is made by real astrologers and not AI, and The Pattern does not make a clear statement about AI on its App Store listing.
Here are their own words.
Co-Star: "We use NASA data to chart the exact location of the stars in real-time. This is then interpreted by real human astrologers who collaborate with AI technology to produce the birth chart and daily horoscopes you read in the app."
CHANI: its listing says it is made by real astrologers, not AI, and the company describes itself as anti-AI and not VC-funded. Its website adds that all content is written and recorded by Chani Nicholas and her team of professional astrologers.
The Pattern: its listing describes a proprietary algorithm for Connect and a new In-Depth conversation feature, without saying whether AI is used. If this matters to you, ask its support team directly.
Does it matter? For many people, yes. Astrology feels personal, and knowing a person thought carefully about the words makes a difference to how much weight you give them.
There are fair points on both sides.
AI-assisted writing can produce endlessly specific daily text for millions of charts, which is part of why Co-Star's notes feel so individual. The risk is confident text that does not quite follow from your chart, or that repeats itself.
Human-written content tends to be more careful and consistent, with a recognisable point of view. The trade-off is that it is often written per sign or per transit rather than per person, and it costs more to make, which shows up in the price.
A practical test works better than any label. Use an app for a week and keep a note of anything that felt wrong, generic or contradictory. Then look at your own chart, which you can draw free on several websites, and see whether the app's notes match what an astrologer would say about your placements. How to Read Your Birth Chart: Complete Beginner's Guide gives you enough to check.
For a broader comparison, including TimePassages, which also says its interpretations are written by astrologers and not AI, see Best Astrology Apps in 2026: Honest Picks, Prices and Which Use AI.
Is an AI astrology reading less valid?
Astrology's value is in reflection, so what matters is whether the reading is careful, kind and true to your chart. Some AI-assisted text does that well and some does not. Human-written text can also be generic. Judge the writing, not only the label.
Which app is best if I want no AI at all?
Of these three, CHANI is the one that states clearly that its content is made by astrologers and not AI. Outside these three, TimePassages makes the same claim on its listing. Both are good choices if this matters to you.
How much does each app really cost?
Co-Star is the cheapest to use well, The Pattern is the most expensive per month, and CHANI sits in between with the highest yearly price. Here are the full price lists from each app's US App Store listing on November 2, 2026.
Co-Star: free to use. Pro-Star monthly $8.99. Question packs: 5 for $2.99, 10 for $4.99, 25 for $6.99. Crush Report (5) $4.99. Eros $6.99. Advanced Chart, Self or Relationships, $8.99 each. Your Year Ahead $11.99. Add Manually $2.99.
The Pattern: free core. Go Deeper+ monthly $14.99, quarterly $29.99, annual $83.99. Go Deeper without audio, quarterly $29.99 or annual $83.99. Connect+ quarterly $24.99. Super Connect 3-pack $8.99. Custom profile slots: 3 for $9.99, 10 for $16.99, 20 for $19.99.
CHANI: monthly $11.99, annual $107.99, and a monthly subscription with a trial at $11.99.
Over a year, if you subscribe: Co-Star Pro-Star is $107.88 if paid monthly, The Pattern Go Deeper+ is $83.99 on the annual plan, and CHANI is $107.99 on the annual plan.
What do you get for the money?
With Co-Star, the paid extras are mostly one-off reports and questions. Many people never pay at all, and the free daily notes are the heart of the app.
With The Pattern, Go Deeper+ opens the full content library, all audio and written insights, unlimited bonds, astrology classes, "time travel" to see how cycles affected you at key moments, romantic timing cycles in Bond Transits and full access to the Connect dating feature.
With CHANI, the subscription covers its personalised transit readings, weekly personal readings from Chani Nicholas, the meditation and sleep library, courses and the year-ahead readings, which its listing describes as month-by-month readings plus annual horoscopes for four main areas of life.
A tip for any of them: start a trial or monthly plan only when you know what you want from it, put a reminder in your phone a day before it renews, and cancel through your Apple or Google account settings if you are not using the paid part.
It also helps to compare with options outside apps. A one-hour session with a professional astrologer costs about $111 to $329 from the astrologers we checked, and a written 12-month report from Astrodienst costs USD 69.90. How Much Does an Astrology Reading Cost? 2026 Prices Compared sets out every tier.
Is Co-Star's Your Year Ahead report worth $11.99?
It is a low-cost way to see Co-Star's take on your year, inside the app you already use. If you want a longer report from a well-known astrologer, or dates you can add to your calendar, compare it with written year-ahead reports, which range from about $4 to $70.
Is The Pattern worth paying for?
It is worth it if you read its profiles and relationship bonds often and want the full library and timing features. If you mostly read the free daily updates, the free version may be enough. Try the monthly plan before committing to a quarter or a year.
What do the apps do with your data?
All three collect some personal data, and none of their App Store privacy labels show the "Data Used to Track You" category as of November 2, 2026. Here is what each label and policy says.
Co-Star: data linked to you includes contacts, identifiers and usage data; location and diagnostics are collected but not linked to you. Its privacy policy, last updated December 11, 2025, says it does not sell your personal information or share it to provide personalised or targeted advertising.
The Pattern: data linked to you includes contact info, user content, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics; contacts are collected but not linked to you. Its help centre says your birth information is visible only to you.
CHANI: data linked to you includes contact info, user content and other data; diagnostics are not linked to you.
Your birth date, time and place are sensitive, because together they can help identify you. Give them only to apps you trust, use Sign in with Apple and hide-my-email where offered, and delete your account inside the app, not just the app from your phone, if you leave.
What about your friends' data? All three invite you to add other people: Co-Star to compare charts, The Pattern through Bonds and Custom Friends, CHANI by saving up to 100 charts. That data belongs to them too, so ask before you add someone's full birth time and place, especially a partner or an ex.
Co-Star's "Add Manually" purchase, at $2.99, lets you see the full chart of someone who does not use the app. It is worth thinking about how that person would feel. A good rule is to only add charts you would be happy to tell the person about.
And what about the contact list? Co-Star's label lists contacts as data linked to you, which usually relates to finding friends who use the app. You can decline contact access in your phone's settings and still use it.
If privacy is your main concern, the simplest choice is a tool that stores nothing. The free birth chart on this site does not store your details, and Astro-Seek and Cafe Astrology can be used without creating an account. Best Free Birth Chart Websites: Astro.com vs Astro-Seek vs Cafe Astrology compares how each handles your data.
Does Co-Star sell my data?
Co-Star's privacy policy, updated December 11, 2025, says it does not sell your personal information and does not share it for personalised or targeted advertising. Its listing adds, in its own words, that it does not "do creepy stuff" with your data. Policies change, so check the current one.
How do I delete my account?
Use the account or settings section inside each app, or contact its support team. Deleting the app from your phone does not delete your data. For subscriptions, cancel through your Apple or Google account first so you are not charged again.
What are the best alternatives to Co-Star, The Pattern and CHANI?
If none of the three feels right, the best alternatives are TimePassages for learning your chart, Sanctuary for talking to a live reader and Astro Future for a low-cost daily horoscope. Here is what each offers, from its US App Store listing on November 2, 2026.
TimePassages: your birth chart and daily horoscope are always free, in its own words, and single extra charts such as transits, progressions and comparisons cost $0.99 each. Pro is $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year. It says every interpretation is written by real, experienced astrologers, not AI and not algorithms, and its privacy label shows only data not linked to you.
Sanctuary: live chat readings with astrologers, tarot readers and psychics, charged per minute, with a 5-minute intro reading for $4.99 from select readers. Sanctuary+ is $14.99 a month or $49.99 a year. Its privacy label includes data used to track you.
Astro Future: daily horoscopes with Premium at $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and one-off packs such as a Love Horoscope at $10.99. Its privacy label shows only data not linked to you.
Nebula: horoscopes and paid chat with advisors, with premium tiers listed from $2.99 to $49.99. Check the period of each plan on the payment screen before you confirm.
And there are good alternatives outside the app store altogether.
Free websites: Astrodienst (astro.com), Astro-Seek and Cafe Astrology all draw your full chart free in a browser, with more settings than any app. They will not send you notifications, but they will teach you more. Best Free Birth Chart Websites: Astro.com vs Astro-Seek vs Cafe Astrology compares them.
A written report: if what you want is the shape of a year rather than a daily note, a report suits you better than a subscription. Cafe Astrology's yearly reports cost $3.50 to $7.95, Co-Star's in-app Your Year Ahead is $11.99 and Astrodienst's Transits of the Year is USD 69.90, all as of November 2026.
A live astrologer: for one big question, an hour with a professional, about $111 to $329 from the astrologers we checked, gives you something no app can: a person who reads your whole chart with you and answers back.
Your own practice: many people end up happiest with a free chart, a calendar of the year's moons and retrogrades, and ten quiet minutes a week. The free 2027 Cosmic Calendar on this site lists every full moon, new moon, retrograde and eclipse of the year.
The right alternative is the one that gives you the feeling you were looking for when you first downloaded an astrology app: a little more understood, a little more ready for your week.
What is the best free alternative to Co-Star?
TimePassages gives your chart and daily horoscope free, with astrologer-written text, as of November 2026. For a chart without any app, Astrodienst, Astro-Seek and Cafe Astrology are free in a browser. Co-Star itself is free too, so you may only need to turn off its notifications.
Is there an astrology app with real astrologers to talk to?
Yes. Sanctuary offers live chat readings charged per minute, and Nebula offers paid chat with advisors. Set a budget and a timer first, because per-minute readings add up quickly: 20 minutes at $4.99 a minute is $99.80.
Which one should you choose?
Choose by the feeling you want after you close the app.
If you want to feel sharpened: Co-Star. Short, blunt, free, with easy friend comparisons. Pay only for the odd report.
If you want to feel understood in depth: The Pattern. Long profiles, life cycles and relationship bonds. Go Deeper+ from $14.99 a month or $83.99 a year.
If you want to feel calmer: CHANI. Gentle, human-written, with meditations and weekly audio from Chani Nicholas. $11.99 a month or $107.99 a year.
If you want to learn astrology properly: none of the three is the best teacher. TimePassages, which gives your chart free and explains each placement, or a free website, will teach you more.
If you want a plan for the year, not a daily habit: a year-ahead report suits you better than an app. Year Ahead Astrology Reports Compared: Free vs Paid (2026) compares the options, from free solar return charts to Astrodienst's USD 69.90 Transits of the Year.
All prices as of November 2026 from the US App Store.
A one-week test settles it. Keep all three for seven days with the same birth data. Each evening, ask yourself which app said something useful today, and which one you actually wanted to open. On day eight, delete the one you skipped most. Pay for the other only if you keep reaching for its paid features.
If what you really want is the shape of your coming year, there is one more option outside the app world. DailyDestiny's Your Year Ahead is a one-time 12-month plan, not a subscription: $29, paid once, and it drops to $19 for the 72 hours after every new moon. From your birthday alone it places every new moon, full moon, eclipse and retrograde of your next 12 months into your solar houses, adds your personal year number and Chinese zodiac animal, and gives you power days that go into your phone calendar in one tap, plus the dates to slow down. It is cheaper than a session because no one reads your chart live: the code was built once and the reading opens on a private page the moment you pay. It suits people who will plan around their good weeks. If you just enjoy a daily note, keep your favourite app and the free horoscope.
Whichever you choose, remember that the best astrology app is a companion, not a boss. Use it to think, not to decide for you.
Which app is best for couples?
The Pattern is the most relationship-focused, with Bonds, Romantic Patterns and romantic timing cycles for subscribers. Co-Star's Eros feature, $6.99, is aimed at couples too. CHANI is more about your own growth than about comparing two people.
Which app is best for beginners?
CHANI explains things gently and adds practical prompts, which suits beginners who want to feel their way in. Co-Star is easy to start but explains less. The Pattern is easy to read but goes deep fast. For learning the mechanics, try TimePassages.
Questions people ask
Which is better, Co-Star or The Pattern?
They do different jobs. Co-Star gives short, direct daily notes and easy chart comparisons with friends. The Pattern gives longer personality profiles, timing cycles and relationship "bonds". Choose Co-Star for a quick daily check-in and The Pattern for deeper self and relationship reflection.
Is Co-Star free?
Yes, Co-Star is free to download, and its daily horoscopes, notifications, chart and friend comparisons are free. As of November 2026 its App Store listing shows paid extras: Pro-Star at $8.99 a month, question packs from $2.99, Advanced Chart reports at $8.99, Eros at $6.99 and Your Year Ahead at $11.99.
How much does the CHANI app cost?
As of November 2026, CHANI's App Store listing shows $11.99 a month or $107.99 a year, plus a monthly subscription with a trial. Its content includes daily horoscopes, weekly personal readings recorded by Chani Nicholas, meditations, courses and year-ahead readings.
Is Co-Star accurate?
Co-Star's planet positions come from NASA data, so the calculations are accurate if your birth time and place are right. Its interpretations are written by human astrologers working with AI technology, in Co-Star's own words, and they are short and blunt by design. Whether they feel accurate depends on whether that style suits you.
Does CHANI use AI?
No, according to CHANI. Its App Store listing says it is made by real astrologers, not AI, and describes the company as anti-AI, and its website says all content is written and recorded by Chani Nicholas and her team of professional astrologers.
What is a good alternative to Co-Star?
If you want astrologer-written text, CHANI or TimePassages. If you want deeper relationship detail, The Pattern. If you want to learn to read your chart yourself, TimePassages or a free website such as Astrodienst or Astro-Seek. If you want a one-time 12-month plan rather than a daily app, a year-ahead report.
What does today hold for you?
Pop in your birthday. Your reading shows up right here. No email, no account.
