What is a trine in astrology?

Imagine you finally get your birth chart read. The astrologer points to a long blue line and says, "Moon trine Venus. That's why people warm to you so fast." You shrug, because doesn't everyone find that easy? Then you wonder what else you are good at without knowing it.

The short answer: a trine is a 120-degree angle between two planets or points, one third of the zodiac, and it is read as the most cooperative classical aspect. Whatever the two planets stand for passes between them without obstruction. It shows a natural gift, often one you don't notice because it never cost you anything.

The word comes from the Latin trinus, threefold; the older name is the trigon. It is one of the five Ptolemaic aspects in Claudius Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, with the conjunction, sextile, square and opposition, and its glyph is an equilateral triangle.

Since each sign spans 30 degrees, 120 degrees counts four signs inclusively and lands on the same element: Aries to Leo, Taurus to Capricorn, Gemini to Aquarius, Cancer to Scorpio. Software draws trines in blue and keeps red for squares and oppositions, which is why a heavily trined chart looks calm before you read a word.

Counting whole signs, the trines from any house fall on the fifth and ninth from it. In Hellenistic practice those houses were named Good Fortune and God, both among the most favorable places, and both trine the Ascendant. A trine means unobstructed exchange between two planets that run on the same logic. It does not merge them like a conjunction or set them against each other like a square or opposition. Each keeps its own sign, house and agenda and simply backs the other. Sun trine Jupiter doesn't make the Sun Jupiterian; the Sun can draw on Jupiter's confidence at will, and Jupiter finds the Sun a willing outlet.

The ability appears early, without training, and you don't register it as a skill. With Mercury trine Neptune you absorb atmosphere and subtext and assume everyone does. With Venus trine Saturn you keep commitments and find other people's inconstancy baffling, rather than admiring your own steadiness.

That blind spot is diagnostic. A square announces itself because it hurts; a trine hides because it costs nothing. In a reading, name the trine's function out loud, because clients often discount the very quality being pointed at.

A trine gives permission, not motive. The planets can act together, but nothing compels them. So two people with the identical trine can look completely different: the route is open, and whether anyone walks it depends on the rest of the chart and the life.

Each planet's condition decides how much is on offer. A trine from Mars in Cancer, weak by traditional standards, to Saturn in Pisces gives less usable stamina than the same trine between Mars in Scorpio and Saturn in Capricorn, where both have dignity to lend. The default trine orb is 8 degrees, extended to 10 when the Sun or Moon is involved. That is the standard modern setting most published interpretations assume. The element supplies the content, because both planets work in the same medium.

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): ease through enthusiasm and self-assertion, the ease of starting things and believing they'll work. This is yours if beginning has never been the hard part.

Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): material competence. Things get built, maintained and paid for without visible strain. You'll notice it when the practical side of life just quietly gets done.

Finding your own trines takes a little arithmetic.

Convert both planets to absolute longitude and compare the gap with 120 degrees. Number the signs from Aries as 0, multiply by 30, and add the degrees. Venus at 14 degrees Taurus is 44; Saturn at 19 degrees Capricorn is 289. The difference is 245, over 180, so subtract from 360 to get 115: 5 degrees from exact, a trine within standard orb. Another: Sun at 3 degrees Leo is 123, Jupiter at 8 degrees Sagittarius is 248, a gap of 125, again 5 degrees wide.
