What is the Part of Fortune in astrology?

Imagine you have just pulled up your birth chart and spotted a small circle with a cross inside it, sitting in a house you never paid attention to. The name sounds hopeful: Part of Fortune. Maybe money has been tight, or work feels like pushing uphill, and you wonder whether this little symbol knows where life might come easier.

The short answer: The Part of Fortune is a calculated point made from your Ascendant, Sun and Moon. In astrology it signifies the body, health, livelihood and the material conditions that hold a life up. It is not a lottery ticket. It describes what tends to sustain you with the least friction.

It is a degree of the zodiac produced by arithmetic, drawn as a circle with an X or cross inside, like a four-spoked wheel, and often labelled PoF, Fortuna or Fortune in software tables. The Greek astrologers called it the Kleros Tyches, the Lot of Fortune, and Latin writers rendered tyche as Fortuna, so fortuna astrology means the same point. Of the many Arabic Parts, it is the only one most modern chart software prints by default.

It does not describe your personality, motives or self-image. It describes the arena where you are materially carried and the kind of activity that brings support with the least strain. You read your Sun sign to understand what you are. You read your Part of Fortune to understand what sustains you.

The second century astrologer Vettius Valens tied the Lot of Fortune to the body and everything the body depends on, and built a set of derived houses counted from it rather than from the Ascendant. That is the older logic: the Part of Fortune as a second Ascendant, the start of a whole secondary reading of material life.

Its companion, the Lot of Spirit or Daimon, swaps the Sun and Moon and carries the soul, the mind and deliberate action. Think of the pair as two halves of a life: what happens to you, and what you do. Fortune holds the first half.

Modern practice has softened the Part of Fortune into a point of joy, ease and natural flourishing, and both readings circulate. Both agree it is not earned through effort the way a tenth house career is. It describes what comes to you, given who and where you are.

How is the Part of Fortune calculated in a day chart and a night chart?

If you like checking things yourself, this is one of the few points you can work out with a pencil.

Day chart: Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun.

Night chart: Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon.

Both use absolute zodiacal longitude, one 0 to 360 degree scale starting at 0 degrees Aries. If the result is negative, add 360; over 360, subtract 360. Negative results are common, especially in day charts where the Sun's longitude is higher than the Ascendant and Moon combined.

Worked example: a day chart with the Ascendant at 15 degrees Libra, Moon at 10 degrees Taurus and Sun at 22 degrees Aquarius. In absolute longitude that is 195, 40 and 322. So 195 plus 40 minus 322 is minus 87. Add 360 and you get 273. Capricorn begins at 270, so the Part of Fortune is at 3 degrees Capricorn.

Nothing is estimated. With an exact Ascendant, Sun and Moon there is one correct answer to the arcminute, rare in a field of interpretation. The only real arguments are about which formula applies.

Run the same positions through the night formula: 195 plus 322 minus 40 is 477. Subtract 360 for 117 degrees. Cancer starts at 90, so this Part of Fortune sits at 27 degrees Cancer, a completely different sign and house.

The two answers mirror each other across the Ascendant-Descendant axis. The day formula puts the Part of Fortune ahead of the Ascendant by the same arc the Moon runs ahead of the Sun; the night formula puts it behind by that identical arc.

To convert a position to absolute longitude, add the sign offset to the degree: Aries 0, Taurus 30, Gemini 60, Cancer 90, Leo 120, Virgo 150, Libra 180, Scorpio 210, Sagittarius 240, Capricorn 270, Aquarius 300, Pisces 330. To convert back, divide by 30: the whole number is the sign counted from Aries, the remainder the degree.

Why does the Part of Fortune formula reverse between day and night charts?

This step decides where your Part of Fortune lands, so give it a few minutes. The reversal comes from sect, the ancient division of charts into day (diurnal) and night (nocturnal), which gives leadership of the chart to the Sun by day and the Moon by night.

Your chart is diurnal if the Sun is above the horizon, in houses seven to twelve, and nocturnal if it is below, in houses one to six. Born in daylight means a day chart.

The Part of Fortune is the lunar lot, and the arc is always measured from the light that rules the chart toward the other one. By day it runs from Sun to Moon and is projected forward from the Ascendant; by night, from Moon to Sun. Without the reversal, a night chart would be measured from a Sun that is not the sect light, which the tradition treats as reading the chart against its own grain.

The practical result matters more than the theory. The two formulas often put your Part of Fortune in a different sign, house and even half of the chart. Getting sect right is the single most important decision in Part of Fortune astrology.

The disagreement is old. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, gives only Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun and uses it for both sects, so the unreversed version is sometimes called the Ptolemaic Part of Fortune. Valens, Paulus Alexandrinus and the wider Hellenistic mainstream reverse it by sect, and that is standard in traditional practice today.

Borderline births need judgment. With the Sun within a degree or two of the Ascendant or Descendant, a birth time a few minutes uncertain can flip the chart from day to night and throw the Part of Fortune across the wheel. Some practitioners count a Sun a few degrees below the Ascendant as diurnal, since it is light outside before the Sun's disc clears the horizon. Where sect is genuinely unclear, calculate both and see which reads truer against your life story.

What are the Arabic Parts and where does the Part of Fortune come from?

The point you are looking at is the best-known survivor of a much bigger family. The Arabic Parts all follow the same recipe: take the Ascendant, add one significator and subtract another, projecting the arc between two chart factors forward from the rising degree.

The name is a historical accident. The technique is Hellenistic Greek, where the points were called kleroi, lots or allotments. It reached medieval Latin Europe through Arabic language astrologers who preserved and expanded the Greek material, and European translators assumed it was an Arabic invention. So the label describes the route, not the origin.

Al-Biruni's Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology catalogs a large set of lots, house by house: parents, siblings, marriage, children, illness, travel, inheritance and enemies.

The Part of Fortune outlived nearly all of them. It is built from the three most important points in any chart, and it was one of the very few lots Ptolemy endorsed.

Its twin, the Lot of Spirit or Daimon, swaps the Sun and Moon: Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon by day, Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun by night. The two sit at equal distances either side of the Ascendant and divide life between circumstance and choice. Fortune carries the body, material conditions and what befalls you. Spirit carries the mind, intention and what you start.

Valens works with both, and later Hellenistic material builds Hermetic lots for Eros, Necessity, Courage, Victory and Nemesis, each derived from Fortune or Spirit rather than the Ascendant directly.

The technique faded in the modern period, then returned with the 1990s translation projects that put the Greek sources back into English, along with Robert Zoller's work on the medieval lots. Reading your Part of Fortune today, you are using one surviving fragment of a much larger system, and its derived house method is the clearest trace of it.

How does the Part of Fortune relate to the Sun, Moon and Ascendant?

Your Part of Fortune is not separate from the rest of your chart. It is your Sun, Moon and Ascendant folded into one degree, encoding the lunar phase of your birth and projecting it onto the Ascendant. That is why it is sometimes called the lunar Ascendant.

In a day chart, the distance from Ascendant to Part of Fortune equals exactly the distance from Sun to Moon. So it marks where the Moon would be if the Sun were rising.

Born at a new moon? It sits on your Ascendant, since the Sun and Moon share nearly the same degree and the arc collapses. Read that way, wellbeing is tied directly to your body and presence, expressed through you rather than circumstances.

Born at a full moon? It sits roughly opposite, near the Descendant degree.

Born at first quarter? With the Moon ninety degrees ahead of the Sun, it lands ninety degrees past the Ascendant in the order of signs, the equal house fourth cusp.

In night charts the arc runs the other way, reflecting it across the horizon. Either way, it is never independent information.

As a derived point, its condition is read through other factors. First is the ruler of its sign, the lord of the Part of Fortune in traditional texts. Since the point is empty and has no essential dignity, the ruler supplies its working condition, and the ruler's house shows where fortune is actually produced. A Gemini Part of Fortune in the fourth house with Mercury in the tenth describes support concerning the home but generated through public work. Aspects come next, conjunctions weighted heaviest, orbs tight, usually under five degrees, since a point has no body to project influence. Before you trust a calculator, give it your exact birth date, time and place, then run three quick checks.

1. Does it apply the sect reversal? Good tools say they reverse the formula for night charts, or offer a toggle between sect sensitive and Ptolemaic versions. If yours says nothing, test it: if your Sun is below the horizon, work out Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon by hand. A mismatch means it uses the day formula for everyone.

2. The house system. Whole sign and Placidus can put the same degree in different houses.

3. Your birth time. The Part of Fortune inherits all of the Ascendant's sensitivity, so a rounded or remembered time can put it a sign or two off.

Check the arithmetic by hand at least once. It takes under a minute.

Once your natal placement is confirmed, it extends into other techniques. Transits are read toward it, not from it: Jupiter, Saturn and the outer planets crossing or squaring your natal Part of Fortune are read as times your material circumstances shift. The transiting Part of Fortune itself circles the zodiac roughly daily and is generally ignored.

Solar return and progressed charts have their own Ascendant, Sun and Moon, so they produce their own Part of Fortune with the same formulas and that chart's sect. The solar return one's house is read as the area supplying support for that birthday year.

Two habits keep your reading honest. Note the ruler before interpreting anything, since the point is inert without it. And do not read it as a promise of wealth. In the Hellenistic sources and in current practice alike, it describes the conditions of your material life, not the quantity. Even in a modest configuration, it still tells you exactly where you are best supported.
