The label stuck because a psychological timeline landed near an astrological one, though less neatly than astrologers usually report. Elliott Jaques, a Canadian psychoanalyst, published Death and the Mid-Life Crisis in 1965, working from the lives of more than three hundred artists and composers who either died in their middle and late thirties or whose output changed sharply then. Jaques put the crisis around 35, at least four years before any Uranus opposition, so the fit is loose.

The closer match came thirteen years later: Daniel Levinson's The Seasons of a Man's Life set a midlife transition at roughly 40 to 45. Astrologers already had a once-in-a-lifetime Uranus transit inside that window and made the connection quickly.

The correspondence is real, and it is the weakest kind of evidence, since any theory predicting upheaval in the early forties would match. The astrological version adds a date range specific to you rather than a decade for everybody, plus a claim about the kind of upheaval: breakage and refusal rather than mourning or regret. That has never been tested to a standard a clinical researcher would recognize, and honest astrologers say so.

Psychology has moved a long way since 1965. The Midlife in the United States survey, which Margie Lachman at Brandeis has worked on for decades, found roughly a quarter of adults said they had had a midlife crisis. The clustering is arithmetic. Neptune takes 164.8 years to orbit, so a quarter is 41. Saturn takes 29.4, and one and a half turns is 44. Jupiter takes 11.86, and three and a half turns is 41.5.
