What is the Midheaven (MC) in astrology?

The short answer: The Midheaven, or MC, is the zodiac degree at the highest point of the sky at the moment and place you were born. Technically, it is the degree crossing the upper meridian, the imaginary line from due south to due north through the top of the sky. MC is short for Medium Coeli, Latin for middle of the sky. It is not a planet, asteroid or midpoint, but a geometric crossing where the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent yearly path, meets the local meridian.
It is one of the four angles, which Hellenistic astrologers called kentra or pivots, with the Ascendant, Descendant and IC, and the most public, marking the sky everyone in a place can see at once. After the Ascendant it is the fastest-moving factor in a chart, sweeping the zodiac in a day, so people born hours apart in one city can share every planet and still have Midheavens two signs apart.
The Midheaven is not the zenith, the point directly overhead. The MC is where the zodiac band cuts the meridian. Because the ecliptic tilts about 23.4 degrees against the celestial equator, that crossing can sit overhead, north or south of it depending on latitude and season; at a northern latitude in winter it can hang fairly low in the southern sky. The meridian crossing defines it, not the height.
It is also a degree, not a house, with a precise position such as 14 degrees Scorpio, and astrologers read aspects to it as they would to a planet.
Traditional texts call the culminating degree the place of praxis, of action and rank, which is where the modern reading of career and reputation comes from.
What does MC stand for in mc astrology?
Medium Coeli, Latin for middle of the sky. Chart software prints it as MC beside a degree and sign, usually at the top of the wheel.
The opposite point is written IC, for Imum Coeli, bottom of the sky. Some older texts spell it Medium Caeli, with an a; it is the same term.
Is the Midheaven a planet or a point?

Unlike the Ascendant, which latitude distorts so that signs rise in very unequal spans, extremely so near the polar circles, the MC depends on local sidereal time alone. Longitude matters enormously. Two births at the identical clock instant in Chicago and New York give Midheavens roughly fifteen degrees apart.
