Eros in Astrology: What Asteroid 433 Eros Says About Your Desire

By DailyDestiny Editorial Team

The short answer

In astrology, asteroid 433 Eros is read as your erotic spark: the specific things that make you feel fully alive, wanted and turned on. Venus shows what you find lovely and how you show affection. Mars shows how you chase. Eros shows the longing itself, the "yes, that" feeling. Its sign, its house and its contacts with other planets describe what lights it up.

Venus shows how you love and Mars shows how you chase, but something else explains the person who wakes your whole body up. Astrologers call it Eros. Here is how to find yours and what it says about your deepest desire.

What does Eros mean in astrology?

Think of the last time desire really surprised you. Maybe it was a voice on the phone, a stranger's laugh, or someone talking about the thing they love most. Your body woke up before your mind had an opinion. It was not your usual type and it did not follow your rules.

Eros is a minor point, so treat it as a detail on top of your Venus and Mars. When it sits close to another planet, in your own chart or a partner's, it can be one of the most revealing details in the whole chart.

People often come to Eros after Venus and Mars stop making sense of something. "My Venus is in Virgo but I am drawn to wild, dramatic people. Why?" Eros in Leo, or Eros touching your Sun, might explain it.

One honest note. No study has shown that asteroids affect attraction. Astrology is a belief system, and Eros is one of its newer tools, used widely only in the last few decades. Read this as a language for desire. If your Eros description fits, it can give you words for things you have felt and never said.

If you have not read your Venus and Mars yet, start there. The free Venus and Mars sign calculator on this site gives both from one birthday, and Asteroids in Astrology: Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta Explained covers the wider asteroid family.

Is Eros more important than Venus and Mars?

No. Venus and Mars are major planets and describe your love and desire in broad strokes. Eros adds a fine, specific layer. Read it after Venus and Mars, never instead of them.

What is asteroid 433 Eros in real life?

433 Eros is a real space rock, a long, peanut-shaped asteroid about 34 kilometres long, and it was the first near-Earth asteroid ever found. It was discovered on 13 August 1898 by Gustav Witt in Berlin, and Auguste Charlois spotted it the same night in Nice. The number 433 means it was the 433rd asteroid to be catalogued.

Eros circles the Sun about every 1.76 years on a stretched orbit that brings it near Earth's path. Astronomers in the early 20th century used its close passes to measure the distance from the Earth to the Sun more precisely.

It also has a romantic place in space history. NASA's NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft went into orbit around Eros on 14 February 2000, Valentine's Day. A year later, on 12 February 2001, it touched down on the surface, the first spacecraft ever to land on an asteroid.

For astrology, the orbit matters. Because Eros swings close to Earth and then far away, its movement through the zodiac looks uneven from here. It can rush through one sign and linger in another, and it goes retrograde, like the planets. That means people born a few weeks apart can have quite different Eros positions, which makes it more personal than slow outer planets.

Eros belongs to a family called the Amor asteroids, named after asteroid 1221 Amor, whose orbits come close to Earth's without crossing it. Amor is the Latin name of the same god, which is a nice coincidence for anyone who likes their sky poetic.

Why is Eros asteroid number 433?

Asteroids are numbered in the order their orbits are confirmed. Eros was the 433rd. Astrologers use the number to look it up in chart software.

Who was Eros in Greek myth, and why does it matter for your chart?

Eros was the Greek god of desire, and the myths about him explain why astrologers read the asteroid as a sudden, life-changing spark. There are two main versions, and both shape the astrology.

In the older version, from the poet Hesiod's Theogony, written around 700 BC, Eros is one of the very first gods, born near the start of the world. He is the force that draws things together and makes creation possible. In this reading, Eros is a cosmic power, the pull of one thing toward another.

In the later, more familiar version, Eros is the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. He carries a bow and arrows. Anyone he strikes falls in love, often with someone unexpected. The Romans called him Cupid or Amor. This is where the astrology of sudden, arrow-like attraction comes from.

The most beautiful Eros story is Eros and Psyche, told by the Roman writer Apuleius in the 2nd century AD in his novel the Metamorphoses, often called The Golden Ass. Psyche, a mortal whose name means soul, becomes the lover of Eros on the condition that she never looks at his face. She looks, he flees, and she goes through a series of hard trials before they are reunited and she becomes immortal. It is a story about desire and soul learning to trust each other. There is also an asteroid named 16 Psyche, the target of a NASA mission launched in 2023, and some astrologers read Eros and Psyche together in synastry.

Plato's Symposium adds a third layer. In it, the priestess Diotima teaches Socrates that Eros is longing for beauty, and that this longing can lead the soul upward, from loving one body to loving beauty and goodness itself. That idea sits behind spiritual views of sex in many traditions.

So when astrologers read your Eros, they hold all three: the force that draws you, the arrow that surprises you, and the longing that can lift you. The Spiritual Meaning of Sex explores that last idea further.

What is the difference between eros and other kinds of love?

The ancient Greeks had several words for love. Eros meant passionate, desiring love. Philia meant friendship and agape later came to mean selfless love. Astrologers use the asteroid only for the eros kind.

How do you find your Eros sign?

You can find your Eros sign free in about two minutes. Most charts do not show Eros by default, so you have to ask for it.

Step 1: go to a chart site that lets you add asteroids. Astrodienst, at astro.com, is the most common free option.

Step 2: enter your birth date, time and place. Choose the extended chart selection option.

Step 3: find the field for additional objects or additional asteroids and type 433. That is Eros.

Step 4: draw the chart. Eros will appear with its sign, degree and house. Many chart sites also list it in the table of positions.

Your birth date is enough for the Eros sign in most cases. You need an accurate birth time for its house.

Once you have it, write down three things: the sign (what kind of thing turns you on), the house (where in life desire comes alive for you) and any planet within one to two degrees (which part of you is fused with desire).

If you want to read a partner's Eros, do the same with their birth data and compare positions. Note any of their planets within about two degrees of your Eros, and any of yours near theirs. Those are your synastry contacts, covered further down.

A tip: many people also look up the asteroid that carries their partner's first name. There are thousands of named asteroids, and some astrologers watch for a partner's name asteroid sitting on their Eros or Venus. Treat it as a fun extra and read it with tight orbs, since with so many asteroids some matches will happen by chance.

Do I need my birth time for Eros?

Not for the sign, in most cases. You do need it for Eros's house and to know if it sits on your Ascendant or other angles, which astrologers read as especially strong.

What does your Eros sign say about what turns you on?

Eros in Aries: you are turned on by boldness, chase and the first moment. Directness is hot to you. Eros in Taurus: you are turned on by the body itself: touch, scent, taste and slowness. Comfort and beauty light you up. Eros in Gemini: you are turned on by words, wit and the mind. A clever text can do more than a kiss. Eros in Cancer: you are turned on by safety and tenderness. Being cared for, and caring, is erotic to you. Eros in Leo: you are turned on by being adored and by adoring. Confidence, praise and a bit of theatre light you up. Eros in Virgo: you are turned on by attention to detail, skill and devotion. Someone who notices exactly what you like is irresistible.

Eros in Libra: you are turned on by beauty, grace and mutual pleasure. Romance and good manners matter. Eros in Scorpio: you are turned on by depth, secrecy and intensity. Total honesty and the feeling of being known are your strongest pull. Eros in Sagittarius: you are turned on by freedom, adventure and laughter. New places and big ideas excite you. Eros in Capricorn: you are turned on by competence, power and slow-burning trust. Someone who is very good at what they do can undo you. Eros in Aquarius: you are turned on by the unusual. Friendship, ideas and breaking the rules light you up. Eros in Pisces: you are turned on by fantasy, music and merging. Desire feels spiritual and dreamy to you.

Now compare your Eros sign with your Venus and Mars signs. If they match in element, your desire is fairly consistent: what you love and what turns you on line up. If they clash, you may feel a pull between the kind of person you want to build a life with and the kind of person who lights your fire. That is normal and very human. Naming it helps you choose with your eyes open.

What does Eros in the 5th house mean?

Astrologers read it as desire that lives in play, romance, creativity and fun. You may feel most erotic when you are flirting or making something. Eros in the 8th, by contrast, links desire to depth and trust.

What does Eros in the 7th house mean?

It is read as desire that comes alive in committed partnership. You may be most turned on by a partner you trust and see as an equal, and you may meet people who stir you through one-to-one connections.

What do Eros aspects in your own birth chart mean?

When Eros sits within about two degrees of a planet in your own chart, that planet becomes part of how desire works for you. These personal contacts are often more telling than Eros's sign.

Eros conjunct the Sun: desire is central to who you are. You may be very magnetic and drawn to creative or romantic expression. Eros conjunct the Moon: desire is tied to feelings. You need emotional safety to feel erotic, and moods strongly shape your drive. Eros conjunct Mercury: talk, writing and ideas carry your desire. Eros conjunct Venus: love and desire move together. You may feel most turned on by people you also find beautiful and kind. Eros conjunct Mars: strong, direct desire and drive. You know what you want.

Eros conjunct Jupiter: a big appetite for pleasure and meaning. Desire may feel spiritual or generous. Eros conjunct Saturn: desire is slow, careful and serious. You may have felt shy or held back early, and you often grow into a deep, confident sensuality later in life. Eros conjunct Uranus: sudden, unusual attractions and a need for freedom. Eros conjunct Neptune: romantic, dreamy desire, sometimes with a weakness for unavailable people. Eros conjunct Pluto: intense, transforming desire that can feel obsessive.

Eros on the Ascendant is read as a very magnetic presence; people may feel drawn to you before you speak. Eros on the Midheaven can show a public, creative or artistic expression of desire.

Squares and oppositions to Eros are read as tension around desire: the planet involved may block or complicate it. Saturn square Eros, for example, can show guilt or shyness to work through. Trines and sextiles are read as ease.

Is Eros conjunct Saturn bad?

It is read as slow-to-open desire, often with early shyness or strict messages about sex. Many people with it develop a very grounded, trustworthy sensuality with time. Patience and a safe partner help.

What does Eros conjunct Venus mean in synastry?

It means one person's erotic spark lands right on the other person's love and beauty, and astrologers read it as one of the strongest signs of attraction among the asteroids. The Eros person often finds the Venus person deeply desirable. The Venus person often feels admired and wanted.

Here are the main Eros contacts to check between two charts, using tight orbs of about one to two degrees.

Eros-Venus: romance plus desire. Often feels like being swept off your feet. Eros-Mars: raw sexual pull. The Mars person stirs the Eros person's longing and wants to act on it. Eros-Sun: the Eros person is drawn to who the Sun person is, their whole presence. Eros-Moon: desire meets emotional safety. Very tender, often very caring. Eros-Ascendant: instant physical attraction to how the other person looks and moves.

Eros-Pluto: intense, almost obsessive desire. It can feel fated. Keep an eye on control and jealousy. Eros-Eros: you share a similar erotic language, which can make intimacy feel easy and familiar. Eros-Psyche: some astrologers read one person's Eros touching the other's Psyche as a soul-and-desire bond, a nod to the myth.

Always check both directions. Your Eros on their Venus is one contact. Their Eros on your Venus is another. When both connect, the attraction usually feels mutual.

The best order to work in: start with the free sexual chemistry calculator on this site, which takes two birthdays and shows both people's Venus and Mars signs and how they spark. Then add Eros as the fine detail. Sexual Chemistry Astrology covers the main planet contacts, such as Venus-Mars and Mars-Pluto, in depth.

What does Eros opposite Venus mean in synastry?

It is read as strong mutual pull across a distance, often with push and pull. The attraction can feel magnetic and a little unsettling. Clear communication keeps it warm.

Does an Eros contact mean we are soulmates?

No. It suggests attraction, not destiny. Many people have Eros contacts with someone they simply find very attractive. Whether a bond lasts depends on kindness, trust and choice.

How can you use your Eros placement in real life?

Use your Eros as a mirror for what actually lights you up, and then give yourself and your partner more of it. That is its whole value: honest self-knowledge about desire.

Write an Eros list. Read your Eros sign, house and aspects. Then write ten things that genuinely turn you on, from small things like a certain voice or a clean room, to big things like adventure or deep honesty. Mark the ones your Eros description predicted. Many people find more matches than they expected.

Share it with a partner. Swap lists, or read each other's Eros description and say "true", "not me" or "maybe". Then each choose one item to bring into the next week. This is far easier than asking "what do you want?" from nothing.

If you are single, use your Eros to notice who and what genuinely sparks you, instead of who you think you should want. It can save you from years of chasing a type that never lights you up.

Feed it outside the bedroom too. Eros in the ancient sense is a force of aliveness. If your Eros is in Gemini, read and write more. In Sagittarius, travel. In Taurus, cook and touch and garden. Many people find their desire returns when they feed the part of life their Eros describes. Sexual Energy Transmutation explores this idea of channelling desire into creative life.

Keep consent at the centre. An Eros contact with someone does not mean they owe you anything. Attraction, however strong, is an invitation that both people must choose. If you feel intense Eros pull toward someone who is unavailable, that is useful information about your own desire, and something to feel without acting on.

Used this way, Eros becomes a small, precise tool for a big thing: knowing your own desire well enough to ask for it.

Can Eros transits show when I will feel more desire?

Some astrologers watch transiting Eros crossing their Venus, Mars or Eros as a time of awakened desire. Use tight orbs. It is a subtle signal and works best as a nudge to make time for pleasure.
