Will a salt bath help sore muscles after training?
A warm bath reliably reduces how stiff and sore you feel, and the salt has nothing to do with it. No good evidence shows that magnesium sulfate adds anything to what warm water does on its own. Delayed onset soreness comes from muscle damage and inflammation sitting days deep in the tissue, which a twenty minute soak does not reach. Sleep and food do more. Treat the bath as comfort rather than recovery, and keep the basics separate from it.
Why do I feel light-headed or exhausted after a hot bath?
Hot water widens blood vessels throughout the body, which lowers blood pressure, and standing up suddenly adds the usual drop that comes with getting upright. Add the fluid you lost to sweat and to immersion diuresis and light-headedness is easy to produce. The fix is dull. Cooler water, a shorter soak, a glass of water beforehand, and standing up in stages. Fainting, chest pain, or light-headedness that persists after you have cooled down and rehydrated should be checked by a clinician.
Does an Epsom salt bath actually help you sleep?
The warm water plausibly helps and the Epsom salt part has no good support behind it. Passive heating followed by a fall in core temperature is one of the better-described routes into sleep, which is why a bath finished one to two hours before bed tends to work better than one taken at bedtime. Does soaking in salt water dry out your skin?
It can, though heat and duration do more of the damage than the salt does. Hot water dissolves the lipids that hold moisture in the outer skin layer, long soaks extend that exposure, and salt left on the skin afterward keeps pulling water toward the surface to evaporate. The fixes are dull. Keep the water warm rather than hot, cap the soak at twenty minutes, rinse the salt off, and moisturize damp skin within three minutes of getting out.
Can children take Epsom salt baths?
Children can usually take a mild salt bath safely: cooler water, less salt, a shorter soak, and an adult in the room the whole time. Their skin is thinner and scalds at temperatures adults tolerate comfortably, and they overheat faster because of their surface area relative to body size. One rule is firm. They must not drink the water, because swallowed Epsom salt is a powerful laxative. Ask a pediatrician before bathing an infant in salt, and before any salt bath for a child with kidney problems or a skin condition.
