Avoid distilled water for direct-method gem water on soft or carbonate stones, since distilled water is aggressive toward minerals and will pull calcium out of calcite and gypsum faster than tap water does. Sparkling water is a poor choice throughout, because carbonic acid attacks carbonates like malachite, azurite and calcite far more readily than flat water and speeds up any leaching.
