Caffeine withdrawal headaches typically last two to four days and resolve within a week. The wider withdrawal window that contains them runs two to nine days. The headache generally begins twelve to twenty-four hours after the last dose, is worst on the second morning, and fades in stages instead of switching off. Heavier habitual doses produce longer and stronger headaches. A gradual taper of ten to fifteen percent per step usually prevents the headache from appearing at all.

Is it better to quit caffeine cold turkey or taper down?

Tapering is better for most people, because withdrawal severity scales with both the size of the habitual dose and the abruptness of the drop. Cold turkey is reasonable if you are under about one hundred and fifty milligrams a day, or if you have a genuinely free week and would rather have three bad days than six mild weeks. Does matcha, green tea or Diet Coke count toward my daily caffeine?

All of them count, and they are where hidden totals accumulate. An eight-ounce cup of green tea carries about twenty-eight milligrams, black tea about forty-seven, and a two-gram serving of matcha between forty and ninety, because you drink the whole leaf rather than an infusion. Twelve ounces of Diet Coke is about forty-six milligrams. Tea also contains L-theanine, and the pairing is widely reported to feel smoother than coffee at the same dose, though the amount in a brewed cup sits well below the doses used in the trials of that combination. Either way the milligrams of caffeine reaching your receptors are unchanged.

Will cutting caffeine actually make me sleep better?

Most people fall asleep faster and sleep deeper within two weeks of cutting caffeine, especially if the last dose used to come after midday. In a 2013 trial by Drake and colleagues in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, four hundred milligrams taken six hours before bed still cost participants more than an hour of objectively measured sleep. Caffeine also suppresses deep sleep, and that depth rebounds during a taper. If insomnia persists a month after your last dose, caffeine was not the cause.

What can I take for a caffeine withdrawal headache?

Standard over-the-counter pain relievers at label doses help, with one specific trap: several combination headache products contain caffeine, commonly sixty-five milligrams per tablet, so they relieve the headache by quietly ending your taper. Check the ingredients. Water, a meal and a short walk help more than they sound like they will. Seek medical advice for the worst headache of your life, a headache with fever or neck stiffness or new neurological symptoms, or one still going after ten days.

How much caffeine per day is too much?

The FDA has cited four hundred milligrams a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults, and has flagged the rapid consumption of around twelve hundred milligrams as a level at which toxic effects such as seizures can be seen. Pregnancy guidance is under two hundred milligrams. Those are population figures. Your own limit is lower if caffeine triggers anxiety, palpitations or reflux, and lower still if it reaches into your sleep.
