On the summer solstice English Heritage opens Stonehenge overnight for managed open access, and tens of thousands of people gather inside the circle to watch the sun rise to the northeast over the Heel Stone around 4:52 am. Druid orders and pagan groups hold ceremonies at dawn, drummers play through the short night, and the atmosphere is closer to a festival than to a service. Entry is free, parking is charged and pre-booked, and alcohol, amplified music and sleeping at the monument are not permitted. Stonehenge also opens for a smaller, quieter midwinter solstice gathering in December.
How far did the bluestones travel to Stonehenge?
The bluestones at Stonehenge traveled roughly 150 miles, or about 250 kilometers, from the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. Excavations led by Mike Parker Pearson identified extraction points at Carn Goedog, source of the spotted dolerite, and Craig Rhos-y-felin, source of a distinctive rhyolite, where stone pillars were levered off natural outcrops. Each bluestone weighs roughly two to four tonnes. Whether they were dragged and rafted by people or carried part of the way by Ice Age glaciers is still argued, though the quarry evidence has strengthened the human transport case considerably.
Is Stonehenge aligned to the sun or the moon?
Stonehenge is firmly aligned to the sun, and possibly also to the moon. The solar case is unambiguous: the monument axis, the Avenue and the framing of the Great Trilithon all follow the line of midsummer sunrise to the northeast and midwinter sunset to the southwest. The lunar case rests on the four Station Stones, whose long sides point close to the extremes of the major lunar standstill, a cycle that peaks every 18.6 years. Salisbury Plain sits at a latitude where those solar and lunar directions fall nearly at right angles, which may be why Stonehenge was built there rather than elsewhere.
Is Stonehenge older than the Egyptian pyramids?
The earliest phase of Stonehenge is older than the Egyptian pyramids, but the famous sarsen stones are roughly contemporary with them. The circular ditch, bank and the ring of 56 Aubrey Holes were dug around 3000 BC, several centuries before pyramid building began in Egypt. The great sarsen circle and trilithons at Stonehenge went up around 2500 BC, within a century or two of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The two projects were unconnected, used entirely different construction traditions, and the people who raised Stonehenge had no writing, no metal tools of consequence and no draft animals hauling stone.
