Do you need a permit or pass for the Sedona vortex sites?

The Airport Mesa saddle lot is small, fee-signed and fills before sunrise. Since 2022 the free Sedona Shuttle has served Cathedral Rock and other high-demand trailheads from park-and-ride lots, and on shuttle days the trailhead lots may be closed to cars. Which Sedona vortex should a first-time visitor choose?

Airport Mesa is the best first Sedona vortex for most visitors. The knoll on the saddle is a short walk from the road, it delivers a full horizon of Sedona in one turn, and it is the classic upflow site, so it gives you the reference sensation the whole vocabulary is built on. Follow it with Cathedral Rock at Red Rock Crossing rather than the steep trail, for a contrasting inflow site at water level. Save Boynton Canyon for a morning with three unhurried hours, since its character depends on walking deep into the canyon rather than reaching a viewpoint.
