The posture is real and the ache is real. The claim that it causes permanent spinal degeneration runs well ahead of the evidence. In most people the symptoms settle once phone height, screen height and the length of unbroken sessions change. Pain lasting beyond six weeks, or any numbness or weakness in an arm, warrants assessment.
How long does it take to fix bad posture?
Comfort often improves within a week or two of changing your setup, because most of the gain comes from removing sustained load rather than from changing your body. Muscular endurance is slower: training studies generally need six to twelve weeks of frequent practice before they can measure a difference. Habits, meaning the position you fall into without deciding to, take longer and depend almost entirely on whether your environment still rewards slumping. Structural change in an older, stiff thoracic spine may never fully reverse, and that is worth knowing in advance.
Do posture correctors and back braces actually work?
They work as reminders rather than as corrections. A strap that pulls the shoulders back gives tactile feedback about where your body is, which is the part people find useful, and the effect ends when the strap comes off. There is no good evidence that wearing one builds lasting alignment, and heavy daily use may allow the postural muscles to do less rather than more. Short sessions as a cue, combined with a properly set workstation, is the sensible way to use one.
Is a standing desk better than a sitting desk?
Alternating between the two beats either one alone. Standing all day brings its own problems, including low back ache, leg fatigue and swelling, and the evidence that sit-stand desks improve health outcomes is weak, although they do reduce sitting time in the short term. The useful part of a standing desk is that it makes changing position effortless. If you buy one, plan to switch every half hour or so rather than standing through an entire morning.
Does sleeping position count as posture?
It counts, but it plays by different rules, since you shift all night and nothing is held under muscular effort. Neck support is the variable that matters: a pillow that keeps the head roughly level with the spine, thicker for side sleeping, thinner for back sleeping. Stomach sleeping is the hard one, because the head stays rotated for hours at a stretch. Wake with a stiff neck several mornings a week and the pillow is the first suspect, ahead of the mattress. Well ahead of the spine.
Can slouching affect digestion?
It can, mainly through mechanical pressure. Slumping compresses the abdomen and raises pressure on the stomach, which is why slouching or lying flat after a large meal produces heartburn more readily than sitting tall does. Staying upright for a couple of hours after eating is standard advice for reflux for that reason. Persistent reflux, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss or vomiting are reasons to see a doctor rather than reasons to adjust a chair.
