Whether a strap changes how you hold yourself after it comes off has not been tested to a clinical standard: the trials that exist are small and short, and most of them record posture while the device is still on, which answers a different question than the one buyers are asking. A muscle held in place by a brace is not being trained. If a corrector helps you notice the slump for the first two weeks, that is a fair use, and then it should come off. Lumbar cushions are more useful, because a chair with no support at belt height genuinely drags the pelvis into a tuck. A rolled towel does the same job for nothing.
Can bad desk posture cause headaches or jaw pain?
Both have recognized clinical names, and the honest version of the link is a strong association rather than a proven cause. Cervicogenic headache arises from the upper cervical joints and the suboccipital muscles and typically refers pain from the base of the skull up and over one side of the head. Jaw pain has two routes: a forward head position changes where the mandible rests, and concentration makes many people clench without noticing. Try one long exhale with the teeth apart at every reset. Jaw clicking that locks, and headaches with visual changes or fever, need a clinician instead of a stretch.
Is it bad to cross your legs at your desk?
Crossing your legs is not harmful in itself, and holding the position for an hour is the problem. Crossing tilts the pelvis, rotates the lumbar spine slightly and puts pressure on the outside of the upper shin, where the common peroneal nerve runs close to the surface, which is why a crossed leg can go numb or produce a temporary foot drop. Alternate sides, uncross whenever you notice, and treat the urge to cross as a signal that your seat height or seat depth is wrong.
Does sitting on an exercise ball improve posture?
Sitting on an exercise ball does not train your core in any meaningful sense. The comparisons that exist are small and short. The best known of them, published by Gregory, Dunk and Callaghan in Human Factors in 2006, put people through a prolonged sitting bout on a ball and on an office chair and found no meaningful difference in trunk muscle activity or lumbar spine posture between the two, with more reported discomfort on the ball. The ball does force small constant adjustments, which is a genuine if minor advantage over a chair you can sink into. It also has no backrest, no armrests and no height adjustment, which strips out three of the five settings worth getting right on a chair. Use it as one of two or three seats you rotate through, half an hour at a time. Eight hours on a ball is a bad trade. Falling off one is a real injury.
Can you do desk stretches in office clothes without drawing attention?
Yes, though clothing changes which version you run rather than whether you can run it. The standing split stance exists partly for this reason: it needs no floor contact, so it survives a suit, a pencil skirt and a carpet you would rather not kneel on. Heels are the real complication. A raised heel tips the pelvis forward and deepens the lumbar curve, so the hip flexor stretch lands somewhere different in shoes than it does barefoot, and the tailbone tuck gets harder to hold. Take them off for that one movement. A stiff collar shortens the chin nod, so loosen it first.
